I've been eagerly awaiting a new ac adaptor for my old Dell laptop (mind you, we're talking ONE YEAR old), which blows through adaptors like a chocoholic in a candy shop. The battery's dead, adaptor doesn't work, and that laptop has my family genealogy research (luckily the files are backed up, but not the program) and my only functioning version of Photoshop (which won't install/work on the new laptop with Vista).
I did the dance (well, gimp, the toe's still broken) of joy on seeing my adaptor on my front step tonight.
It doesn't work.
The power light turns on when I plug the adaptor in, and goes out when I plug it into my computer.
ARGH.
GAAAAH.
I can't bear the thought of dealing with Dell chat support tonight. I'll have to deal with it tomorrow. My first day of vacation. Sigh.

Try taking out the battery, then plugging it in. That's worked on many a dead laptop for me.
Hi Lori! I'm so sad that I've done that without success. The adaptor works on other computers, not this one -- the LED goes OUT when I plug it in, with or without battery in. So I can't say (or hope) it's a faulty adaptor. The battery is completely drained. Everything I've read and some of my techy friends point to faulty mother board, which makes sense given all the other things that this poor computer's gone through.
Darn!
That's a good tip though!
