What the rain is good for ...

Moss!

I lost a couple of branches in the backyard during the storms this week, nothing like last year though (thank goodness). One larger branch exploded on impact with lots of pieces showering the glass doors (SO glad they didn't break!). My cats raised their heads at the hullabaloo (huh? what?) then passed out again.

I was a little more shaken, but relieved to see the wreckage wasn't that big of a deal.

Today, sick of the rain, I went outside anyway, raked up leaves and little branches, then carried bigger pieces over to the side of the yard. This piece I kept!

I fell in love with the tiny little world living on this maybe 12-18" long and maybe 4" wide piece of log, from way up in my 100+ year old tree!

When I was small, I was convinced that fairies and elves lived out in our yard (despite growing up in the desert ...). Now I'm thinking they're living up in my tree. Hope they're staying dry! :)

Thank you ladies! I love moss anyway, but to find such a rich universe of moss and lichen on such a small space ... I was elated. :)

Wowee, thank you for the wonderful blog award! xo and :D

It's like a mini world. I'm sure fairies and elves do live there. :)

That moss and lichen looks to be the exact kind that I gathered this morning (is that a surprise?) for my terrariums!
