My last birthday picks!

After a night of serious hacking and sneezing and wheezing ... I feel better right now (I say this from a prone position, sitting with Molly curled up against me on the sofa, watching birdies and squirrels together ... life is good). Fingers crossed that this upward trajectory continues!

Here are my LAST birthday picks!

1. Golden laurel earrings, from Shop Clementine
2. Savor gift set - nature scents, 3 mini creme fraiche, from Savor
3. Gold digger lariat, from Urban Legend

Happy Friday! You can still enter the drawing for a Phydeaux hand crocheted and knitted brooch!

Lavender and snap dragons

Oh cuteness! Lavender Sachet - Hand Embroidered Snap Dragon, from Quiltish by Allissa Jacobs, $20.

The irony of a cold in May

I didn't really realize last weekend that I was in the midst of developing a cold.

Argh!

I thought that my weirdly mildly sore throat was from using the a/c at night to keep cool. I thought that my increasing sneezing was from the dust from cleaning out my back room. I finally caught on late Monday (last day off of my four day weekend) that I was s-i-c-k.

Nevertheless, I went to work on Tuesday and yesterday (I'm sure my coworkers appreciated that). I did leave a bit early yesterday, dizzy and coughy and sneezy and a few other seven dwarf names. And it was strongly suggested that I go home today after an hour or so at work (my voice wasn't working and reality was shifting around on me, fun!), and I didn't resist.

Dozing off and on all day, low grade fever, already feeling sorry for yourself, is all the more fun when it's freakin' hot outside and in! You just don't want to curl up in your bed under a toasty comforter when it's sunny and very warm out.

So, happy birthday to me, what I got for my bday is a cold! I suspect I'll spend much of my four-day weekend taking it very very easy, vs. my original plans. I have had a couple of new designs running around in my head that I may just be mocking up this weekend!

I did manage to snag for myself a DrikaB bag today during Etsy's Shop Live with Marichelle event today - yay! You can see it above. I heart DrikaB's bags - and have needed a laaaarge tote/bag, so that's one of my bday gifties for myself. The others are a few new pieces of jewelry from the very talented Nicole at Lillyella (you can see one at the top!). Watched Phydelle for a very exciting Lillyella event coming up!!!

So, you know, colds come and go. This is my turn (it's been going around the office). I'll recover - I truly will. I'm just a little annoyed that my turn ended up the same week as my bday. Go figure!

I hope you all enjoy the last few days of May, and don't forget to enter your name for my birthday giveaway!

New Craft Venture Post Is Up!

I hope you all had incredible Memorial Day weekends. The real Memorial Day is May 30 - my birthday (did you enter the drawing for a Phydeaux brooch?)! So I always get a three-day weekend near or on my bday! My four-day weekend (my place or work is closed starting on Friday!) was incredible. So incredible that I nearly forgot to share that my latest Craft Venture post is up!

Writing is something that many many people struggle with. I'm lucky that it's one of the few talents I was born with. :) This week's topic continues the discussion on writing, this time writing your shop announcements, profiles, etc.

So go on over, read, and let me know what you think!

Sqoosh monster

It's a happy day at Chez Phydeaux when I break out Knotty Naomi's wonderful handspun. I love knitting her "sqoosh monster" yarn, spun thick and thin. I work with a lot of handspun thin/thick wool, but have to say I love Naomi's most of all. :)

I'm just casting on a new scarf using the beautiful wool above. Sigh. It's like an entire English garden spun up into magical merino wool.

I hope you'll check out Naomi's shop (particularly as she adds new goodies)! If you're a knitter, you can also see her on Ravelry!

Blush Lace Cotton Scarf

My second lace scarf is listed in my Etsy shop! This one is a lace rib knit (rib knitting helps the knitted fabric lie flat rather than curl in on itself), using an organic cotton that I am so in love with. I'll picking up some additional colors this weekend!

Malabrigo en lace

Malabrigo wool, aka crack heroin for knitters, is a dream to work with. Buttery soft. Gorgeous, saturated colors. Not an itchy fiber whatsoever. Sigh.

I recently decided to master knitting lace, something I've always wanted to do, but was a little too intimidated to try. And designing lace patterns? That's just crazy talk.

But I was determined, first got over my inability to knit from charts (that was a tough one, but I'm much more confident now) earlier this month. Then knit a lot of swatches in fingering an lace weight yarns (most of which stunk - hard to see yarn that fine!). Then thought, hmmm, let's play with some Malabrigo!

So here we are - my first lace design and in one of my very very favorite wools. I flanked a lace panel with lace columns and an i-cord border. I'm very happy with this, just wish I'd had more wool in this colorway so that it could be longer.

To be listed in my shop this week!

Life before internet

Once upon a time, we didn't have an internet. We didn't have cable TV. This was my mantra when I came home to neither on Friday evening! But I'm back this morning, functional and a little digital media-deprived, but in one piece. I feel as th0ugh I've been on the Moon for some time, but suspect I'll catch up to modern life pretty quickly.

In the meantime, what was your favorite indie find from this weekend?

Jewelry: Modern deliciousness

I have always loved jewelry made by independent designers. I love this cuff! I love its bold, strong lines. I always love constellation references (I wanted to be an astronomer when I was a kid). I love the brass with its lovely finish.

Good Grief - what a season finale!

I won't give a single thing away. I'm only going to say GOOD LORD, I don't think I've ever held my breath, chewed my nails, cried, said "Ah ha!" or "Whaaaaat?" so much during a season finale in my life.

What a great show!!!

Oh, LOST, do I really have to wait until 2010 for the wrap up?

1000 Markets

In true Brenda fashion, I started opening a 1000 Markets shop back in December, but finally finished the process and was approved this weekend.

So, introducing Phydeaux on 1000 Markets! I need to decide how I'll differentiate lines and venues. I don't know much about the ins and outs yet (new empathy for newbies!), but am glad to have branched out a wee bit (though I vaguely feel as though I'm cheating on my beau - I am a very loyal being!).

Anyone else have experience to share?

Squirrels: the new owl

I adore watching my backyard squirrels, as do my 100% indoor kitties. Squirrels of all shape, size and style seem to be popping up with increasing frequency these days!

Ooooo, whipped cream!

I just described in loving detail, with lots of photos, how to make your very own whipped cream over on Phydelle!

You can make it: whipped cream!

I was going to show you how to make your very own butter tonight. But found out, as I assembled the necessary tools, that my food processor is broken! Darn, that means I have to buy a new one. :) Instead, I'm going to show you how incredible easy it is to make whipped cream. I make my own rather than buy because (a) store bought is horrendous tasting, (b) store bought is full of sugar and I'm diabetic (though I don't always behave like it), and (c) it's so incredibly easy, you'll never go back once you try it out.

I actually started making my own when I was in the midst of the South Beach diet several years back. I wanted something to put on berries in the spring and summer, on top of sugarless angel food cake. I loved it!

So, here we go! You'll need:

  • 1/2 pint of heavy whipped cream (I recommend organic and the best you can afford - I love Straus Family Creamery)
  • Sugarless sweetener to taste (I use about 1/2 packet of Equal or a teaspoon of Splenda - I like mine not really sweet)
  • A splash of vanilla (again, the best you can afford - it makes a difference!)

Might seem obvious, but just in case - check the date of your cream before buying, and then before using! I always give mine a nice shake before opening up, so that any of the fat solids that may have separated to the top mix in with the rest of the cream.

If you're smarter than me, you'll chill your beaters and bowl ahead of time. I always forget. In any event, pour about half the bottle (I hate to measure - I cook like my grandmothers!) into the bowl. For you purists, one half pint = one cup.

Add your sweetener or sugar (you can start light and add more later, at the first taste test). It doesn't take a lot!

Add your PURE vanilla extract. It doesn't have to cost a lot and a little bit goes a long way!

Assemble your blender and put the beaters in before you turn it on; otherwise, you may be wiping down cream from the kitchen walls, counter and yourself!

Turn your blender on - the lowest setting to start! We beat this to incorporate air into the cream. Whipped cream isn't much more than cream with a lot of air. Start out slow and watch as your cream mixture transforms. Lots of bubbles are normal right now: air.

When your cream starts looking like pancake batter (thicker and more substantial), time for a taste test!

Well, it's a spoon taste disguised as a taste test. Dip a clean spoon into your semi whipped cream. Is the cream sticking on the spoon or slipping right off? If the former, you're nearing the final push. If the latter, you have some more whipping to do. Either way, give it a taste. Sweet enough? Back to whipping! Not quite, add a little more sugar/sweetener.

In either case, move your blender setting up, so that you're incorporating more air at a faster speed. But keep an eye on your cream! It doesn't take much to go from whipped cream to butter cream to butter. You're looking for soft peaks.

I'll share with you that I'm always worried that I'll blow it and end up with butter cream. So this is the stage that I really focus on. Soft peaks means that peaks that you form in the whipped cream with your beaters stay peaked, but with nice soft edges. Just like above! Similarly, if you dip a spoon in, the whipped cream shouldn't slip off at all and the peaks should stay put. Just like below!

Honestly, you could beat a little more than this - I like my whipped cream very soft. If that seems a little too "raw" for you (as a friend of mine once so colorfully said), you could beat for a wee bit more for a more "done" whipped cream.

You can lovingly plop it upon berries or cake or an ice cream sundae! You should store it in the fridge, sealed up tightly. I love to grate a little fresh nutmeg on the top of mine - heaven!

I hope that if you haven't tried making your own whipped cream before, you're now inspired to try it out! Let me know how it goes in the comments below!

Glamour girl

Fiona is incredibly photogenic, but getting her to sit still long enough for a great photo is nearly impossible.

I've been dying to get a nice shot of her with the new camera, but am still figuring out the settings, so she's usually morphed into 20 other poses by the time I finally get it. I was SO happy to get the above this afternoon! What a gorgeous kitty. :)

True to herself, she then rolled, flipped, scratched and thank the LORD I caught this side splitting yawn. Hee!!! What a clown. :)

Art Gallery Friday

I started out life as a fine artist. I've been drawing and painting since I was small and even have a couple of awards to show for it!

I'm excited about featuring independent fine art every Friday. If you have suggestions for future galleries, contact me! Tonight, I'm highlighting a few original paintings.

Love the textures. Love the colors. Love the painting! Waking Up, by Lampreia.

Why a rooster, you ask? Because my folks are organic, free range egg growers (you have to raise and care for chickens in order to have eggs!). I love this painting's whimsy as well as the glint in this rooster's eyes. Rooster98 by RozArt.

Dreamy and lovely! Bodhi Tree, by JMCdesigns. (Full disclosure - I own several of her pieces ... and I love them all!)

Phydelle is here (the blog anyway)!

How do you entertain yourself when you're healing up a toe with man made holes in it? And an unhappy tummy?

You finish up a blog you started months ago!

I hope you'll drop by, add a comment or two, follow me, subscribe, have a good time, etc.

If you're interested in being interviewed, having a giveaway or contributing, let me know!!!

Mother's Day Love

Luckily, I have Mother's Day covered, even from afar. If I'd been more organized, any of these would have been perfect for Mom's special day!

Mom looooooves shortbread. Combine that with ginger and you'd have her for life! This is truly my very favorite cookie, from Whimsy and Spice (and trust me, I've done my share of tasting their wares).

Meet my Mom, lover of kitties and lover of books. White kitties? All the better! Her kitty is snowy white. Mom would adore this print from Amber Alexander!

I love jewelry and flowers - guess where I got that from? Yep - my mom. How about a bouquet for her finger? This lovely ring is by Yellow Goat!

The fun continues

Foot's doing pretty OK now (thank goodness). Not so for the rest of me (boo). I'm rolled up in my favorite blankie on my sofa, watching birds and squirrels with the girls, while sipping ginger ale (yuck). Cancelled my trip to Sacramento (double boo), though I'm so relieved that I did that yesterday, given how I'm feeling today!

My poor toe

Well, today certainly wasn't much fun.

I headed off to my podiatrist to have an ingrown toenail taken care of. When I say "taken care of," I don't necessarily mean taken out back and shot, a la Sopranos (which I've never watched before!). I mean part of my toenail removed, which is always an occasion for merriment.

I planned to go to work right afterwords. After all, it's just my toe. (Neglecting to remember the umpteen million times I've broken or bashed toes this year.)

Uneventful partial toenail removal (I politely declined the option to remove the whole thing). I was assured that the anesthestic would last a full four hours. As soon as I hobbled outside, OW, anesthesia was wearing off. :\

It's a funny thing with my autoimmune issue plus peripheral neuropathy. Painkillers and anesthetics never behave the way they're supposed to. I'm so used to asking my dentist for a face block rather than 25 or more anesthesia injections (stopping mid procedure, multiple times, for more, SO much fun) that I forget about this. I don't think this podiatrist would have cared much. He wasn't exactly the warm and fuzzy type.

So, started off in the direction of work. Within 20 minutes, foot was throbbing in pain. Took the next left and headed home. Let work know the situation, planned to log in later after consuming a bucket of tylenol. Woke up off and on throughout the afternoon, totally zonked, which is weird, because my only pain killer was tylenol. :\

The first night is always the worst. I could easily sleep right now, just trying to figure out how I'm going to do that with a tangerine size dressed toe and an unhappily throbbing foot. I have to go to work tomorrow! That should be amusing.

This too I shall survive ... just not looking forward to the experience!

The punch line? After this one heals, I'm having the entire nail removed from my big toe on my other foot - my driving foot. I have no idea how that's going to play out ...

Good distractions

I'm hunkering down and focusing on a couple of new designs that I'm submitting for possible (very possible) publication. I'm very excited about what I'm working on and look forward to tell you more about them later on!

Since I'm also in the midst of work deadlines, am visiting my dearest friends Kris and Rich to watch STAR TREK this Friday (not that we're excited or anything, nope, not us!) on Friday, and then visiting my folks at the end of the month (Birthday Month!), I won't have a lot of new designs for the shop until mid to late June.

I'm a little torn about this. But am excited about the possible opportunities!
